THE 40TH NATIONAL FARMERS DAY, 2024

The East Gonja Municipal Assembly held its 40th annual Farmers Day celebration on November 8, 2024, with an emphasis on fostering climate-resilient agriculture to ensure sustainable food security. The event was held at the Salaga Community Astroturf with the theme “Building Climate-Resilient Agriculture for Sustainable Food Security,” addressed the importance of climate-smart farming practices in a world facing environmental challenges.

 It was a significant occasion, drawing farmers, community leaders, government representatives, and residents to honor the dedication and resilience of farmers in the Municipality. The event was chaired by Chief and graced by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon Richard Broni, Hon. Member of Parliament (MP) for Salaga South, Hajia Ibrahimah Mhammed Zuwera, Municipal Coordinating Director (DCD) Sylvester Naah Kyiileyang, Municipal Director of Agriculture (MDA), Sulemana Alhassan

In the opening remarks, the Chairman acknowledged the vital role of farmers in ensuring food security and highlighted the importance of climate-resilient agricultural practices to safeguard the future.

The Municipal Director of Agriculture Mr Sulemana Alhassan gave the welcome address, acknowledging the farmers’ dedication and the significance of climate-smart practices. He highlighted ongoing programs that support farmers in adopting drought-resistant crops, sustainable soil management, and water conservation techniques. He encouraged farmers to continue exploring and adopting climate-resilient strategies to secure their livelihoods and protect the local food supply.

Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) stressed the need for collaboration in building a climate-resilient agricultural sector. He acknowledged the efforts of our gallant farmers, whose tireless efforts feed not just Ghana but contribute to food security across the West Africa sub-region. But presently, we face unprecedented challenges as climate change threatens our traditional farming methods and food security.

The highlight of the event was the awards ceremony, recognizing outstanding farmers in the Municipality. Mr Mutala Abubakari    was awarded the prestigious title of “Best Farmer” in the Municipality. He received a Motor King together with other Agric-Inputs. Other farmers who had demonstrated excellence in crop diversification, sustainable livestock farming and some Agric. Extension Officers who exhibited excellences in their work were awarded with various Agric-Inputs.

In the closing address, the Chairman congratulated the award recipients and reaffirmed the Municipality’s commitment to supporting local farmers in their journey toward sustainable agriculture. He encouraged everyone present to remain dedicated to building a resilient agricultural sector, ensuring that future generations have access to a secure food supply.

The 40th Farmers Day celebration in East Gonja Municipality was not only a tribute to the hard work of local farmers but also a powerful reminder of the community’s commitment to embracing sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural practices.
