INAUGURAL CEREMONY OF THE GONJA MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY

A speech was read on behalf of the President, H.E. Nana Akufo-Addo by the Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon. Andrews Egyapa Mercer, In his address, the Sector Minister congratulated the Elected Assembly Members for a good fight and commended the Electoral Commission for a successful election amidst numerous challenges.

 He advised the Assembly members to go by their duties as enshrined in the Local governance Act 936 (2016). The Sector Minister entreated the newly inaugurated members of the Assembly to build good working relationships with colleague Assembly Members, their District Chief Executives, Members of Parliament, Staff of the District Assembly, and the people they represent. 

The speech further encouraged them to establish strong partnerships and collaborate with the local structures particularly, the Urban, Town, Zonal and Area Councils, the Unit Committees and Traditional Authorities as well as other identifiable groups to facilitate the work of the District Assembly to optimise the ideals of local governance.

Following the successful conduct of the District Level Elections in December last year, inaugural ceremonies were held across 259 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the country, with the exception of Nkoranza South Municipal and Nkoranza North District Assemblies whose tenures were yet to end. 

East Gonja Municipal Assembly participated in the inaugural ceremonies held on Monday, February 12, 2024, at the Municipal Assembly Hall to swear in a total of Thirty-four (34) Assembly Members, i.e. twenty-three (23) Elected Assembly Members and eleven (11) Government Appointees.

The Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon. Andrews Egyapa Mercer tasked them to work in unity among each other and for the Assembly to realize it’s objectives. He charged them to bring on board innovative ways to boost the Assembly’s internally generated fund (IGF) since the expected District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) currently has its challenges.

The event  was attended by The Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon. Andrews Egyapa Mercer doubling as the President’s representative, Hon. Hajia Ibrahimah Mohammed Zuwera,  Member of Parliament (MP) for Salaga South, Isaac Ankah Eqs, State AttorneyMunicipal Chief Executive, (MCE), Hon Richard Broni,  Municipal Coordinating Director (DCD) Sylvester Naah Kyiileyang, Kpembewura Banbagne Ndefoso IV and Elders, Religious Heads, Service Commanders, Heads of Departments,  Staff, of the Assembly, Former Assembly Members and the general public.

After the inaugural ceremony, Hon. Nasiru Yakubu was elected as the Presiding Member through an election supervised by the Municipal Electoral Officer, Frank Asuman-Adu. The Presiding Member than, adjourned the sitting for the day.
