E GONJA: Assembly, others work to improve household toilets

East Gonja Municipal Assembly in collaboration with UNICEF and e For Future Generation organised sanitation fair at Salaga, Kpembe and Naamu.
The rationale behind it was to create awareness to improve sanitation practices and to avoid open dedication.
It was realized that, open dedication could be avoided if household toilets are built in each house. The actors in the sanitation sector were brought together from the communities where the fair was held.
These actors exhibited various types of latrines and KVIPS which could be constructed at prices ranging from GHC1,200.00 to GHC1,800.00 for beneficiaries to make their choices for construction of latrines in their houses.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Muhammad Tamimu, whose speech was read on his behalf by the Planning Officer at the fair at Salaga market said increase access to sanitation was a priority of the government to achieve sustainable development, so the assembly will try its best to improve sanitation in the area
According to Mr. John Bibrim, the Municipal Resource Person for Hope For Future Generation (HFFG) representing UNICEF said at the sanitation fair center that local artisans have also been trained to construct various types of household latrines and KVIPs at affordable prices to enable people patronize.
Mr John Bibrim disclosed that out of 18,811 households in the municipality, 3,500 have now access to household latrines. “110 communities out of a total of 293 communities have been declared Open Definition Free (ODF)” said Mr. John Bibrim.
